@jonjon.jpeg: The centerline was born in Michigan when Edward Hines noticed milk dripping from a truck, marking the road. It became a symbol of safety, keeping cars on their side. But research shows it can also backfire; giving drivers false confidence, making them go faster and pay less attention to people outside of cars. Narrower lanes and edge lines can slow speeds, but centerlines alone often do the opposite. #carculture #urbanism #transportation #transit #cityplanning
Very interesting psychology! In the UK, double yellow lines are at the edge of the road and mean ‘no parking’. It’s so strange to see them in the centre of the road!

And yet most drivers dislike that sense of discomfort in neighborhoods without pavement markings, so they beg me (as a Town Commissioner) to have staff paint lines to help them *feel* safer.

ive notices that lots of places in the uk are not replacing centre lines when they resurface small county and urban roads sounds like a double win, save money ey on road painting and forcing drivers to take more care.

That’s true. I’m in Wisconsin where there’s tons of rural roads and the ones without the line in the middle definitely make me go slower for that exact reason. I don’t trust cars in the opposite direction to keep to their side.

I’m re-learning how to drive in the UK and the lack of centre lines freaks me out! But as with everything that freaks me out here on the road, it turns out safer than the way I grew up with in the US. Thank you for these videos!

Double yellow lines are commonly used for arterials, which usually have a higher speed limit. I would never think of it as traffic calming.

I think China learned this by studying the interaction of drivers when they removed all stop signs at what would've been a 4 way stop. That was studied DECADES ago.

Drivers in St Louis hug the center lines. The fear of cars drifting across the lines is real.
