@historyyistimeless: On June 8, 2014, 52-year-old cave researcher Johann Westhauser was struck in the head by falling rock over 3,000 feet underground in the Riesending cave system beneath the German-Austrian Alps. With no radio signal, one teammate climbed 12 hours to get help while the other stayed behind in darkness to keep him alive. The cave was the deepest in Germany, full of freezing water, drop-offs, and passages so narrow a stretcher barely fit. Hundreds of rescuers from across Europe set up phone lines, anchor ropes, and hauled in 12 tons of gear. At one point, another rockfall almost buried the rescue team mid-operation. It took 11 days and 728 people to finally bring him back to the surface. It remains the largest cave rescue in German history — and against all odds, Westhauser survived. #TrueCrime #truecrimetok #DarkHistory #TrueStory #tragedy
