Born on July 25, 1983, in the Myagdi District of Nepal and raised in Chitwan, he grew up far from the world of elite climbing. His early life was modest, and his ambitions initially had nothing to do with the Himalayas that towered near his birthplace. Instead, he set his sights on joining the British Army, specifically the Gurkhas, a prestigious regiment known for discipline and bravery. He achieved this goal in 2003, and his military career soon took him further, when in 2009 he became the first Gurkha soldier ever to serve in the United Kingdom’s Special Boat Service, one of the most elite special forces units in the world. His years in the military taught him resilience, physical toughness, teamwork, and survival skills—qualities that would later form the backbone of his career in mountaineering. Unlike many climbers who dedicate their lives to mountains from an early age, Purja’s mountaineering journey began relatively late. His first climb was Lobuche East in 2012, when he was nearly thirty years old. Just two years later, in 2014, he reached the summit of Dhaulagiri, his first peak above eight thousand meters.
