Spells, on a basic level, involve binding things together, which is why the spelling of a word is the binding of letters. Also why to expel is to separate something from another thing.

In many Aboriginal Australian cultures, language is seen as a feature of the land, no different than the trees or the rivers, and visitors were traditionally expected to learn and speak the language of the land as long as they stayed in that region.
