Well “Russian” was always like a mutual identity for different Slavic tribes rather than actual small homogenous genetic group. North, South and West are too genetically different to be considered some small homogenous ethnicity so “Russian” is closer to being a synonym for “Slavic”

We are Slavs, we are all relatively the same in Slavic countries. Average person can’t tell most of us apart. I just tell people I’m Slavic. At the end of the day, that’s what I am anyways. Whether I am Polish, Russian, Serbian etc.
