@zigurdmednieks: #waymo #costs #profitable #alphabet #Google Waymo can continue to expand without draining Google's finances. Expect expansion to accelerate.
Don’t have to guess google has already put out all the numbers. It is $9 per ride and cost of vehicle is $180K because of equipment. For the quarter 1 according to alphabet the loss was around 1.23 billion.

The part I’m most curious about their expansion is how well they’ll adapt from newer, car centric cities like Phoenix to older, much less friendly driving cities like Boston, Philly, most of the east coast

I'm not unconvinced that the choice to use Jaguars and gorgeously-expensive lidar "beanies" isn't a protracted exercise in software security.

Operators are a huge operating cost; they have near-instant availability to respond to calls from customers, cops, and confused cars to take over driving. Every single takeover is a new data point for the training set and simulator though.

I don't know how one plans capacity for rides, but when I was planning centralized servers in the 90s, we gauged that 75% peak average use was about the right amount of headroom for unexpected surges and incremental growth between upgrades.

Plus, if they're already breakeven the numbers can only get far better in the future.

the hardware is cheaper than that. the most expensive part was the lidar sensors and it has come down substantially.

I don't like them. They have like, zero situational awareness. I seriously tried riding (and reporting bugs as a user) and got spooked when the car completely ignored the presence person of color on a motorcycle. No on-screen visualization, and there was no attempt to shift within the lane that one would normally do when trying not to clip somebody.
