People calling the J-35 a copy of the F-35 forget that the F-35 itself benefited from Yakovlev’s Yak-141 research in the 1990s. But that doesn’t mean the F-35 is a copy of the Yak-141. They share some concepts and similarities, yet the F-35 has its own independently developed technology. By the same logic, calling the J-35 a straight ‘copy’ oversimplifies things and just isn’t correct.
