to live is a great beautiful movie, Zhang Yimou before he started making big budget blockbusters, red sorghum is also great, I mix up those two a lot since I watched them pretty close to each other.

I love your content. I just started watching Chinese TV dramas about a year ago. I primarily watch historical dramas. They’re absolutely magnificent. Great acting, great costumes, great plots, great storylines, you’re magnificent. Currently I’m watching Nothing Gold Can Stay. Absolutely brilliant.. I’ve seen over a dozen Chinese movies, especially movies with Zhang Ziyi. Totally brilliant actress.. in fact, many of the Chinese actresses are top-notch.

A good list. Very commercial taste which is fine. The Wandering Earth is terrible!! Sooooo over the top and melodramatic (sorry!). For some more “indie” Chinese films with a more gritty realistic outlook on China are : 1) A Touch of Sin (banned in China) 2) Long Day’s Journey into Night 3) Shadow 4) The Wild Goose Lake 5) Ash is the Purest White. It’s such a shame that even in today”a modern China (a brilliant film) that Farewell My Concubine is still banned 😔

Funny enough, it was a Chinese movie that started me questioning what I'd been taught about China. I can't remember it was an Indiana-Jones-like movie and helped me see the fascinating balance of traditional culture and the modern. Then I watched "The Good, The Bad, and the Weird" where I learned China had its own wild, wild West! that was a fun movie. Then I watched a pirate one. I only remember that I liked it and I was down bad for one of the actors.
