@officialkaizenlab: 🔥 When Endeavour reentered Earth’s atmosphere, its skin was not metal, it was covered in 24000 plus thermal protection tiles designed to survive the extreme heat of reentry. 🌍 As the orbiter plummeted at Mach 25, friction with the atmosphere created plasma around the shuttle, with temperatures exceeding 1500°C (2732°F). Aluminum, which makes up much of the shuttle’s structure, melts at only 660°C, so NASA engineered a unique shield. 🧱 Each tile was made of reinforced silica fibers (essentially pure sand), 94 percent air by volume, giving it incredible insulating ability. You could heat one side of a tile red hot with a torch and still touch the other side safely with your hand. 🔹 Black tiles (LI 900 silica coated with borosilicate glass) protected the shuttle’s belly, absorbing and radiating heat away. 🔹 White tiles and flexible felt blankets covered less extreme areas, reflecting solar heat while still insulating. 🔹 No two tiles were alike, every single one was custom shaped to fit its spot on the orbiter. ⚡ The system worked like a thermal sponge, absorbing intense heat at the surface but preventing it from ever reaching the aluminum airframe. Without these tiles, Endeavour and every Space Shuttle could never have returned safely from space.
