@essence: It chilled my body, but not my soul. As the sunsets on summer, we’re reflecting on our time in Martha’s Vineyard at Inkwell Beach where the Polar Bears dipped into sacred waters, and carried nearly eight decades of Black tradition forward. What began in 1946 as a safe space for Black Swimmers has turned into a sanctuary of prayer, laughter, wellness, and legacy. Today led by the incredible Caroline Hunter, generations still gather here not just to swim, but to honor history and community. As we say farewell to the summer days, let’s take one last dip in the waters.
