How to Make Quick-Change Magnet Tape ⬇️ Magiciangate may be still going on, but did you know you can turn bias tape into magnet tape for tearaway costumes? Magnets may not hold up to stress as well as the weed whacker cord closure we talked about in parts 1 and 2, but they are crazy fast and super easy to use! For long seams that need to easily open with little effort, I used numerous tiny rare earth magnets sewn along both sides of the seam. And to make quick work of this, here’s the method I used to make magnet “tape” that can be easily sewn to all of your tearaway edges! Supplies: ✨ 1/2” bias tape ✨ Small rare earth magnets (1mm for this example) ✨ Sewing machine or needle & thread 1️⃣ Measure the width of your magnets. Take your bias tape and sew a channel slightly larger than this measurement along the side nearest the fold. 2️⃣ Turn your bias tape 90 degrees and close the channel by sewing a line between the bottom of the channel and the folded edge. 3️⃣ Starting at the bottom line, measure and mark even increments along the channel where your magnets will be. For an easy to pull closure like this, space your magnets 2” apart. If your seams need to be sturdier and hold up to more strain, space your magnets closer together. 4️⃣ Slip one of your magnets into the channel and push down until it’s flush against the bottom line. 5️⃣ If you need to, place a pin above the magnet to hold it in place. Use a zipper foot or hand sew just above the magnet in order to fully trap it inside the channel. This doesn’t not need to be super snug. 6️⃣ Repeat steps 4-5 for each magnet mark on your strip. Then create a second strip for the opposite garment seam. 7️⃣ Sew your strips along the both edges of the garment so that the magnets placements match and are positioned closest to the opening. If this area of your costume will ever be visible, you’ll want to instead be sure to attach them cleanly: align raw edge of your strips to your garment edges right side to right side, sew, flip, and press.
