Truly not trying to sound like an annoying booktok hater by any means, but I feel like a lot of the readers of these books don’t critically engage with the content the way other fan communities do. I rarely see the kind of conversation like hear from the more “fandom-y” works. Even the fanart well doesn’t run nearly as deep. It feels like there must be a correlation there. And this is coming from a big fan of the ACOTARa and Fourth Wings who wishes there was more interesting fan content.

I’d argue most of them already cover most of the fanfics tropes so we don’t feel the need to add our own and so many of the recent romtasy fmc are self inserts so yeah lol it’s like you don’t wanna touch their OC LOL

I think it has to do with the fact that romantasy is written with a specific couple being explicitly laid out, while the fandom series from the tumblr days (Harry Potter, Supernatural, Percy Jackson etc) had lots of side characters built out over many years before any romances came into play

While I can’t speak for all Romantasy (and wouldn’t), the examples you list are, from my perspective, heteronormative. And in the larger fandoms examples you use (I.e. good omens) the ships driving those fanfic numbers up are queer fics. Many fanfic writers are writing for themselves, but also for representation and relationships they aren’t going to find in the source material. So they make it. Something I don’t think the fanbase for those romantasy books are looking for or feel the need to fill (they already got it with the original material). Beyond that, I think fanfic writers are more inspired to write on a series where romance is not the main focus. Romantasy covers the romance and I often see people in those fandoms get fickle about anyone exploring noncanon ships (especially if they go against a canon ship) While other series where romance is not the main genre leave room for that to be explored more freely, which results in inspired fanfic writers.

If a Nickelodeon kids show that came out in 2015 (Miraculous Ladybug) can have 69k fics on AO3 I don’t think it’s because fanfic has declined, it’s more something to do with either the genre or the fandom. I personally think it’s the genre.

I agree with a lot of people’s comments and I think an interesting exception is Twilight. It had a huge fanfic community that the majority was for the het main couple.

i really disagree with the first point. arcane has gotten over 50k fics in four years. obviously older fandoms will have more fics, as they’ve had more time to accumulate fics, but in the top ships of the year on ao3 many were pretty new

I'll make an argument against your second point, because the MDZS fandom is massive and that is a romance, almost all the fics are for the main couple of the series

I think 2 is not a strong theory because of stuff like danmei. MDZS is a romance where you are rooting for the main couple but it has 89,000 fics and that's just one. As for 1, big fandoms still exist after 2014 (ex. Genshin has 217k fics) and it came out in 2020. I think it really is just the type of person that likes romantasy doesn't overlap with fan creators

IMO, non canon ships typically have more works than canon ships/couples bc fan works are meant to fill in gaps. The “what if” makes it exciting for fic writers. Romance doesn’t give you many gaps to fill in.

As someone who engages with fandom and booktok, there’s just not a lot in these books to dig into and write fanfic about besides the central couple.

Non-canon ships are also looked down on in the ACOTAR fandom overall. I find a lot of fanfic to be written about those kinds of ships

Fanfic thrives on books that prioritize character building over romance; it leaves readers with the building blocks and mental space to wonder about alternative character interactions, whether it be romance or otherwise!

they do build on some tropes from fanfiction, maybe it sits in the same niche in the mind of some fans ??

maybe it's just me but I think it's because every single male character in most romantasy books is like... the same character. there's zero fodder for MLM ships and let's be so honest, that's one of the primary drivers of shipping culture

The romance as a main focus is a good point - if you already have a satisfying romantic ending with a couple you like, there’s less incentive to “fix it”/ship characters aka the life blood of most fandoms. The most popular straight ships I can’t think of came from non-romance stories or became popular before the completion of a series. But also fanfic communities are often deeply queer. Even tho RWRB is a romance with a satisfying ending, it has 12k fics to ACOTAR’s 14k despite having ~1/4 of ACOTAR’s GR reviews. When queer fanfic writers are already invested in queer fandom, I think it’s less of a jump to switch to an actual queer romance and there’s even an incentive to appreciate real queer stories outside of just fanfic. Whereas, I think a lot of people like straight ships Reylo or Dramoine for the “what if” and a completed romance series like ACOTAR won’t have the same draw to create content after completion of the series for those people.

The perfect storm for fanfic is A) an interesting world or conceit and B) a missing element. I find most romantasy books really weak on the world building and they already engage in the vast majority of fanfic tropes. Also the secondary romantic interest almost always ends up with someone else in a sequel.

the problem with romantasy is that it doesn’t want you to ship, they want you to insert yourself into the mc. like there’s no real motivation to write fanfiction because the oc x reader has already been fulfilled in the book

I think I always connected most with fanfics from the perspective of someone who existed in the world but as a bystander to the events or someone just existing in the same world but a different time like in hunger games or Percy Jackson for example. I feel like modern romantasy doesn’t lend itself to having these same rich worlds or experiences but idk...

Not the whole reason, but I suspect a number of would be fannish creators are writing their own books that are basically fics and bypassing the fic-to-trad pub pipeline 🫤🤷♀

FF is for fixing what you are not getting from the original content. I find most romantasy readers are already escaping into the romantasy and live by the authors word. Also, I feel like FF thrives where romance is not provided. Ships you know will never happen.

the more open door a romance, the less likely the fandom consuming it will feel the need to "fill in the gaps". fanfiction exists to fill the void in the audiences heart lol
