Gina Torres talked a LOT about how she is literally half Hispanic but the only roles she can get are the ones that reflect what she LOOKS like; a Black woman. Not mixed. Not remotely Hispanic. Just Black. She said casting producers and execs also don't SEE her as anything other than a Black woman.

As a half Black person, I consider myself Black, however, I acknowledge that if I’m the only Black representation, that is not enough. The almost exclusive casting of mixed or lightskin Black women is definitely diluting Black representation

unfortunately i think its pretty obvious that colourism will always be the barrier that stops us from having good black representation in media. We could say "but we're all black!" but we've segregated ourselves within the community too much for that

It rubs me the wrong way that such a historically rich conversation is so often reduced to the 1 drop rule. The concept of Blackness is viewed differently around the world because colonization rules varied country to country. Out of that grew important cultural differences that aren’t right or wrong, they’re just different.

This is one place where it’s interesting to look at other countries, the UK for example. They didn’t have the one drop rule like we did so being mixed race is actually treated as its own separate racial category that exists outside of being white or being black. Racism and colorism still exist along those lines, but those lines are more clearly understood to be there than here in the US. Idk what that tells us necessarily but I’ve always found it interesting

this is such a multifaceted discussion especially when you include all black diaspora. every country sees race differently and it's hard to say if there's any right way to see it because at the end of the day race is a social construct created to divide us and justify exploitation.

i never understood why we can't say i'm Black and.....I'm black and American. I'm black and Dominican. Being black is community building imo and could really allow us to move with power vs division.
