The town of Tonbridge is located in the southeast of England, in the county of Kent. It lies on the River Medway, 45 kilometers southeast of London. It is the administrative center of the borough of Tonbridge and Malling. The town's population is approximately 32,000 people. History The town was first mentioned in official documents dating back to the 11th century. These documents contain information about the construction of a castle by Sir Richard FitzGilbert. He received the lands here from William the Conqueror as a reward for his assistance in the Battle of Hastings. A settlement grew alongside the castle, and it was recorded in the Domesday Book as Tonebridge. On old maps, the town was designated as Tunbridge until 1870, when it adopted its current name. It was founded on a spur of high ground near a ford, the most convenient for crossing the river. Several ancient routes intersected here. For a long time, the town was located north of the river, as the area south of it was often subject to flooding during high waters. King John claimed the town after the signing of the Magna Carta. Some time later, it was besieged by the troops of Prince Edward, son of Henry III. The besieged garrison was forced to set fire to the town to prevent it from falling into enemy hands. The castle and the settlement itself were subsequently rebuilt. In the 13th century, Edward II established his residence here. A separate hall within it served as a document repository. In the late Middle Ages, Tonbridge enjoyed the status of an important strategic point. Henry II planned to protect the town with powerful fortified walls. A royal charter was even issued. This document granted the right to construct fortified walls, hold fairs and court hearings, and provide two members of parliament for the town. However, the walls were never built as planned. Only a ditch was built around the town for defense and the bank was fortified. Only faint traces of these buildings remain today. Many historic buildings remain in the historic center of the town, among which the Port Reeves on East Street is considered the oldest. In 1552, during the reign of Edward VI, a public school was founded for the children of local gentry and wealthy peasants. By that time, an educational institution for the children of the town's poor already existed. During the Civil War, a Parliamentarian garrison was stationed in the town. During their stay in the castle, they partially rebuilt it. In 1740, a decree was issued permitting navigation on the River Medway to the Tonbridge wharves. This provided the local population with essential materials, particularly lime and coal. Hops, gunpowder, and timber also began to be shipped down the river to Maidostone. Some of the wharves built during this period still remain and can be seen on the bank downstream from the town's main bridge. The town subsequently became famous for its woodworking and decorative work. Local artisans crafted various pieces of furniture and decorated them with exquisite inlays. Later, cricket ball production developed. Initially, they were produced in small quantities. Over time, production reached industrial scale. #city #beauty #day #sun #sky #water #river #streets #nature
