A MAGNETAR is a rare type of neutron star that possesses the most powerful magnetic field in the universe, reaching a colossal 10¹¹ tesla. With a diameter of just 20 to 30 kilometers, this object weighs more than our Sun, and a single teaspoon of its ultra-dense matter would weigh about 100 million tons on Earth. The strength of its magnetism is so immense that if a magnetar were at the distance of the Moon, it would instantly wipe all credit cards on Earth and literally tear the atoms of a human body apart. Unlike ordinary pulsars, which are powered by the kinetic energy of their rapid rotation, a magnetar shines by consuming its own decaying magnetic field. The star's crust is under immense tension and periodically cracks, triggering monstrous "starquakes." These events release catastrophic bursts of gamma and X-ray radiation; one such flare unleashed more energy in a fraction of a second than our Sun emits in 150,000 years. The magnetar stage is incredibly brief, lasting only about 10,000 years before the magnetic field fades and leaves behind a "quiet" neutron star. Because of this short lifespan, only about 30 magnetars are currently known in our galaxy, though they remain a hotbed for modern discoveries.
