Kong Mountain range was printed on maps for over a hundred years. Thing is, these mountains never actually existed. That didn’t stop publishers from including them on numerous maps and educational materials in the 1700s through late 1800s. Through copying and repetition, this fabricated mountain range was generally accepted as fact until an exploration group in the late 1880s finally discovered there were in fact, no major mountains there. This is an example of how repetition of fabricated ‘facts’ can alter people’s perceptions at scale. This, over time, can affect entire populations to accept truths that are… not exactly true. This has been happening for centuries and is still quite prevalent today in our ultra-connected world. Can you think of examples of fabricated ideas that are now accepted as ‘facts’ by many? #maps #geography #cartography
