@rpgbotdotnet: Replying to @itsnickbabe Monks are only DnD characters good at fighting unarmed, and I think that’s fine. Punching dragons shouldn’t be something that every class can be good at. #dnd #dnd5e #2024dnd #ttrpg #characteroptimization
the unarmed fighting style is bad? it's a d8(/d6 if your holding something), tavern brawler is a d4? I've seen a number of monk builds that incorporate the unarmed fighting style specifically for the increase in damage since to get d8s you need to be an 11th level monk

Fair enough, but I think Monks are fairly restrictive class as far as flavor goes. They lean heavily into discipline, and I think a Fighter or Barbarian subclass that leans more into a berserker-type unarmed fighter could be a good addition to the game. Dance Bard is a great example on a non-Monk take, without infringing too heavily on Monk

i appreciate that there's at least a little bit of support for unarmed fighting for other classes just because trying to map the idea of a professional wrestler type strength based grappler onto the Monk has always felt like a flavor mismatch for me

I am a big fan of the unarmed fighting style battlemaster enabled by tashas

my favorite thing about monks is they are never caught unready to fight in an equipment sense

with the feat that gives your unarmed strikes a d6(or d8 if you have both hands empty" I toyed with a combat momentum buff for monks. scales but starting out if you hit with 2 attacks the second does +1, 3attacks land +1d2. up to at 17 when it's second attacks 1d4 1d6 and 1d8 for second 3rd and 4th attack

I think it's interesting that you are saying monks were always bad when I've often heard people in the past complaining that they were cheesy and op, especially some of the things you could do in 3.0(there was a psionic version that you could really exploit with the ability to vampire touch on all your unarmed strikes dealing extra damage and effectively making you regenerate)

ironically you actually helped me figure out a bizarre way to punch people a lot, in your build video about monk/artificer, you pointed out that the defender armorer lets you punch people for 1d8, if you use it with two weapon fighting style and the dual wielder feat you can punch people 1-2x as an action (5th level armorer) and once as a bonus action. pairing this with monk is clunky and MAD, but if you did it with fighter it'd probably work a lot better especially something like psi warrior or of course always battle master

I do think there's a case to be made for Barbarian having at least a subclass that looks at unarmed fighting as an option - and not just the bestial claws and bites, but something kinda Hulk-like.
