I don't know, maybe I'm just being The Devil's Advocate, but is it possible? The old man was slamming his gate, because he felt harassed about his own stuff on his own property and the officer put his arm out to stop him from slamming the gate. wouldn't that be an officer putting himself in harm's way after an action and not the old man slamming the gate on the officer.
