“Nicholas Cage movie releases are correlated with swimming pool drownings, so you should not swim in a pool while Nic movies are at the box office.” Most people understand that’s a silly thing for me to say because they aren’t looking for drowning to be explained by movies. It’s just as silly to make statements like that about Tylenol when the scientists are saying “we don’t know if this of causal.” I can’t say that we don’t have an increasing number of autistic people. I can’t say that all of the increase is just people who wouldn’t have otherwise been diagnosed actually getting diagnosis and support. But what I CAN say is the increased awareness of symptoms is a big driver in more people getting tested. There is definitely a causal link between that awareness and the number of people diagnosed. We’ve proven that.
