I’m confused why can’t they pronounce someone died in the ambulance even if it’s obvious they are???

My dad was an EMT for a bit in a small town, and his worse story was having to do CPR while listening to the death rattle of the patient for about 45 mins of an hour dive to the big city because the small city hospital couldn't treat them properly

doctors are trained for 12 years EMS nowhere near. EMS aren't as trusted as doctors therefore only a doctor declaring someone dead can be trusted

its about legality and medical training. a doctor has the legal and medical certification to declare a person dead. a paramedic does not.

It is very true, if you stop cpr while the patient is on the stretcher it becomes a crime scene and you are now out of service for hours while they investigate the death.

Not true. Most state protocols allow you to work arrests on scene and pronounce after a predetermined treatment and medical consult. But if you transport, then you’re working them until the hospital.

Luckily that’s not a thing in the UK 😅 if CPR is futile you stop, whether in the ambulance or not.

In germany the same. if someone would be declared dead on the way to the Hospital, the ambulance Has to stop and wait for the coroner.
So mann Hospital habe a "elevator of death" from the Garage to the ER.

This is the reason I work codes at the scene...no reason to transport a dead body to the hospital.

We work them on scene and if after a while we get no changes we call medical command and over cell phone with doctor on other end of line we can call it in the field. Technically the doctor is calling it. If we put them in the ambulance they are alive until emergency room doctor calls it in the emergency room.

What I use to tell new guys….”he was kicking an screaming when we hit the ER doors. Whatever the doctor did when we turned him over is on him”😂

Paramedic here, after a certain number of round of CPR, we can declare it ONLY if we have explicit online direction from the medical director of the county (trauma surgeon). If you have an MD at the end of your name, declare whoever whenever lol

Yeah, this scene was written by someone unfamiliar. Once cpr is started only a dr can tell them to stop. This is usually done by phone tho and doesn’t have to be at a hospital.
