What about the omnivores? So many birds flock for social and safety reasons I find I hard to set aside the idea that dinosaurs also engaged in similar behaviour 🦕🦜

I still am a fan of raptors not exactly being pack hunters but much like many birds of prey breeding pairs would hunt together. Weather they brought their hatchlings with them I am not sure

I agree that we shouldn’t assume pack hunting in carnivorous dinosaurs without evidence. However if we look at examples of pack hunting in the modern day, there is one common denominator: the size of their prey. All modern pack hunters today do so in order to take down prey meaningfully larger than themselves. So I think it stands to reason that if we have evidence of say, utahraptors hunting prey animals 3-10x their size, they likely did so in groups. Considering how many large herbivores existed at the time, and how intelligent we speculate them to be, it doesn’t seem very far fetched to me

You should’ve also mentioned pair bond hunting. This is very common in modern birds, where one parent will hunt, often taking turns. Some even both hunt at the same time. This is different from pack hunting as it’s exclusive to parents, not just general family members or even met members.

That's actually such a huge wakeup call, growing up I loved Jurassic Park. I learned at a pretty young age that JP's Velociraptors were actually Deinonychus just the names swapped around, so I would find as much information I could on the animal as it was my favorite. I think I had like 100 different dinosaur books containing Deinonychus and all of them referenced the animal HEAVILY being pack hunters. It's crazy to think all those books got such a shaky and undetermined fact in them and not even acknowledging how unsure we are of that detail, but instead portrayed it as 100% fact.
