@tilscience: Scientists unearthed the oldest mummies in the world and they’re no where near Egypt This incredible find was published last week in PNAS “Earliest evidence of smoke-dried mummification: More than 10,000 years ago in southern China and Southeast Asia” and is a cumulative of work starting in 2017 Human remains found across SE Asia and China exhibited signs of a mummification process through burning - smoking the deceased over an open fire over a prolonged period to preserve the body. The remains have been dated from 4000 all the way to 14,000 years old. What’s amazing is we’ve now seen mummification as a death ritual in various ancient communities across the world. What significance did this ritual hold for this even older community? Fascinating stuff. For those who are still reading - a Cleopatra Dr. Kathleen Martinez update is coming this week 👀 #archaeology #mummy #ancient #ancienthistory #skeleton

There is a museum in Sichuan Province where they uncovered the remains of a civilization they had no recorded history of. They were Sun worshippers and had a symbol for it. They seemed to follow what Indians & Egyptians and other such cultures did.

Bodies tend to take up a lot of public space, I often wonder if it developed as a technique to save room? Preserves public spaces?

My belief is that the ancient world was far more interconnected than we realize. I remember reading a few years ago that some groups in South America have genetic markers that until recently were considered unique to New Zealand. People back then did way more than we give them credit for.

My guess would be that they didn’t have the tools to dig into hard soil as deep as you would need to get it so that you wouldn’t smell the body decomposing so the best way of getting rid of tissue would be to do a modification process in this manner?

My question is why people wanted to preserve the bodies? I don’t know much about ancient Chinese religion, but was there a belief that they would need those bodies in the afterlife? Or maybe this prevented disease? So interesting!
