Bottle refusal tip that nobody talks about enough 👇 If your baby is refusing the bottle, most of the “general bottle feeding advice” on the internet no longer applies. Because you are no longer in a general feeding situation. You are in a SKILL BUILDING situation. A lot of exclusively breastfed babies will take a bottle easily in the early newborn weeks… then suddenly around 2-3 months (or beyond) they act like they’ve never seen a bottle in their life. That’s because bottle feeding is a learned motor skill, and if it hasn’t been practiced regularly, babies can lose familiarity with it. This does NOT mean: ❌ your baby is stubborn ❌ your baby is manipulating you ❌ your baby “just hates bottles” ❌ you failed the introduction window forever It means your baby needs introductory training methods to learn how to feed effectively from a bottle again. And here’s where the nuance comes in 👇 I LOVE the Pigeon bottle for many breastfed babies because it supports functional feeding mechanics well. BUT for my own baby during bottle refusal? It was actually too hard compared to breastfeeding. For babies refusing the bottle, we often need bottle feeding to feel EASIER than the breast at first — not harder. We do not want them working even more for milk when they’re already resistant. So for my baby, we temporarily switched to Lansinoh because the flow was faster and easier for her than the Pigeon. It also flowed faster than my natural letdown, which helped her actually experience success and stay engaged with feeding. That does NOT mean we stay there forever. First we build confidence. Then we build skill. Then we can graduate to more functional feeding goals. This is why bottle refusal support is SO individualized. There is no one “best bottle” for every breastfed baby. And mama - if you’re struggling with this: You are not failing. Your baby is not difficult. Your baby just needs support and the right training approach. ❤️ Whether you need occasional freedom, support for your mental health, or you’re preparing to return to work - it IS possible for a breastfed baby to also learn to take a bottle successfully. I’m here to help. Let’s do motherhood together. We’ve got this, mamas 🤍 #bottlerefusal #breastfeeding #4thtrimester #IBCLC #workingmom
