There is much more to raid in that expression than Leonardo's Mona Lisa. This is a much more enigmatic expression and no matter how you look at her face it's very difficult to fathom what that expression means. Beautiful painting

In my terrestrial opinion Mary had an affair or was a victim of r@pe, and as any smart scared teenager, to avoid ending up stoned to death, or to lose her engagment to Joseph, or to avoid a deadly public humiliation, invented the whole announcing thing to cover up, and made everyone believe her virgin birth story. I know this contradicts the core beliefs of Christianity, but the Gospels also show Joseph's initial suspicion of infidelity. The divine explanation was offered to resolve the situation and prevent severe legal consequences for Mary, like being alienated by the whole community, which at that time meant to die abandoned, or worse, being stoned to death for adultery.
