Step 1: The Veterinary Diagnosis is CRITICAL
The liver can be sick for many reasons, and the treatment depends entirely on the cause. You cannot heal the liver without knowing what's wrong. Your vet will likely do some or all of the following:
· Blood Tests: To check liver enzyme levels (ALT, ALP), bilirubin (which causes jaundice/yellowing), and other markers.
· Ultrasound: To look at the liver's size, shape, and texture. It can reveal tumors, cysts, or a fatty liver.
· X-rays: To assess the liver's size and look for abnormalities.
· Biopsy: The most definitive way to diagnose the specific type of liver disease (e.g., hepatitis, lipidosis, cancer).
Common Causes of Liver Problems in Cats
1. Hepatic Lipidosis (Fatty Liver Disease): The most common serious liver disease in cats. It occurs when a cat stops eating (often due to stress or another illness), and the body sends fat to the liver to be processed into energy. The liver gets overwhelmed and fails.
2. Cholangiohepatitis: Inflammation of the bile ducts and liver, often linked to bacterial infections or inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
3. Toxins: Ingestion of toxins like certain plants (lilies are extremely toxic), chemicals, or medications (e.g., acetaminophen/paracetamol, which is fatal to cats).
4. Cancer (Neoplasia): Such as lymphoma or other tumors.
5. Trauma: Such as being hit by a car.

How a Cat's Liver is Treated (Under Veterinary Guidance)
Treatment is a multi-faceted approach aimed at supporting the liver so it can regenerate itself. The liver has a remarkable ability to heal if the damaging cause is removed and the cat is given proper support.
1. Nutritional Support: The Most Important Factor
A cat with liver disease MUST eat. Force-feeding at home is often necessary.
