@idesofmarge: Replying to @maia angel fake dating leaves a lot to be desired in the realism department which is often okay for romance but when we are supposed to believe it every time and there’s not much believability there? It can be a hard pill to swallow! #fakedating #romancebooks #romancewriter #romancetropes #writersoftiktok

maybe i just am always down to do stuff for the plotline of my own life, but i find it incredibly believable for someone approached by an attractive person for a fake dating scheme to be like “sure, why not. this should be entertaining”

Personally I can never suspend my disbelief and fall for the fantasy of fake dating, the reasons why they have to fake date are never something I can ever believe. I do get why it's so popular though, just not for me

I’m about to do a fake dating book and it’s between a widow and a demisexual where neither want to date, but they’re trying to get people to just leave them alone at a family reunion. 😏 but they’re friends first, too.

I have a book I’m writing and I’m struggling with this exactly. I have a perfectly good reason on from the FMCs pov but for the MMC I feel like the only reason I have for him to do it is because he wants to and I don’t think that’s a good enough reason.

My favorite is when the friends and family of the couple pretending are just, not shocked at all about the development. They even will say like, ‘oh finally, we’ve been waiting for you guys to get together for years.’ And then the two bond over them being incredulous and confused about this perception, and then they each individually reminisce, over time while fake dating, and realize that they’ve been having feelings for each other. So then the fake dating turns into fake– fake dating, where they don’t want the other to know that they actually are developing real feelings, but it’s so good because it’s both of them pretending to pretend and sorta unintentionally sabotaging the fakeness with their real feelings until it comes to ahead, especially when they’re angsty abt the realization and now have to hide THAT from their fake partner on top of already pretending🤣. The only problem is when this occurs, the reason for having to fake date in the first place just gets thrown to the wayside; I like the trope don’t get me wrong, but I’m taken out of immersion when the story derails, and it often does in romance endings lmao.

This is why I think fake dating combined with enemies or rivals to lovers often doesn't hit. Because they have to convince the reader that both parties have equally valid and compelling reasons to fake date. And the characters have to convince their friends/family/etc that they suddenly had this huge change of heart. If my friend started dating their enemy/rival, I'd have a lot of questions. If the MCs are friends, the second person's motivation can be caring about the first person. Or if they're just starting to date or in a situationship and are pretending to be more, that's easier to believe too.

for me the most believable version of the trope (i should specify this is in fanfic, not romance books) is when character A who is a character with a rich family comes to their already established friend (important note, MUST be a friend) character B and goes “look my family is really really pushing for me to get married for business reasons but i would rather do literally anything else!! so would you pretend to be my partner so they don’t make me get married” and B is like “sure why not. win-win i get to go on a fun side quest and i also get to help my friend A”

i don't read much of any romance, but i do think it's delightful how these romance-logic tropes serve the function (as articulated by contrapoints) of disavowal

I LOVE fake dating in YA (I ate up tatbilb and dungeons & drama) because the stakes made sense to me, like they’re kids so it’s going to seem so much bigger to them. But fake dating in romance is a miss more than not because like, I’ve read ones where the couple is in their late 30s like what is the point of that 😭

tbh a lot of these troupes don’t work well outside of fanfiction because the authors don’t put in the effort to make you care about the characters. they work well in fanfiction because it’s different than what the original story was but with characters you know and love

I’ve always preferred marriage of convenience over fake dating because, even in a contemporary setting, a marriage of convenience can work. There’s usually a valid reason to get married, but I find that there is rarely a serious enough reason to compel me to read an entire book about two people trying to convince everyone that they are in a relationship. It feels comical.

one time I read a story where two people pretending to be EXES but then actually started to like each other/fall in love and their friends were secretly keeping them apart because they thought they'd fight (they pretended to have a messy breakup)

I'm just too much of a mutual pining/forbidden romance angst monger for fake dating to do anything for me. The only fake dating trope I've really enjoyed is the lavender marriage types, we can't be with the people we actually love in public so we'll pretend to be together to obfuscate our actual romantic inclinations (followed by the lie blowing up, conflict, and then they get to be with who they actually love having gained some fire forged friends out of the ordeal ofc).

To all the boys I’ve loved before did this very well because it established that Lara was not very confrontational in the beginning and back that up by having her take any other route than just talk to the people she loved

Yes put some thought into it but I love this troupe just from a comedy stand point. There is just so much room for unhinged comedy gold. Son in Law and The Proposal are some of my favorite Rom Coms. Add some enemies to lovers let them just act a fool trying to both embarrass each other while convincing everyone else while proving they both are just one freak matching another's freak.😂

My favorite fake dating trope is we’re best friends and everyone assumed we were dating and now we have to pretend otherwise we look stupid and I don’t want any questions when my family visits or it’s the holidays or grandmas dying wish 😭

I fear my boyfriend and I DID fake-dating trope ourselves purely because we thought it'd be funny to mess with a friend of ours 😶
