A true marvel of early horology. This drum-shaped watch, made in Germany circa 1530–1550, is among the earliest groups of portable timekeepers. Its gilded dial, engraved with a radiant sun and I to XXIV hours, with ‘touch-pins’ enabling the time to be felt, rather than seen, in darkness. The engraved case, adorned with scrolling foliage and a soldier, hints that its maker may have been a locksmith or armourer, rather than a traditional watchmaker. Within, a robust iron movement with fusee and verge escapement.
