I’m a retired LEO (Det. Sgt 2009) I don’t understand why some officers make a huge deal about delaying telling them why they were stopped. Every traffic stop I made I approached the driver & said “good morning/ evening sir / m’am I’m Sgt X w the police department & i stopped you for speeding or running stop sign etc.” -If it was for speeding I’d say- “I checked your speed by radar at 55/35 etc I need your driver license, registration & proof of insurance.” It’s not that deep, at all. Withholding that info can set some people off & it only escalates a confrontation that need not exist. That was my routine for every stop I made w the exception of a fleeing vehicle & or felony stop etc. People just want to be treated w respect so why aggravate them when it’s just not necessary? Delaying telling them till after they give a license has nothing to do w safety. However there are times when they have a warrant you may want to delay telling them they have one but that’s different. Stop making things harder than they should be. Because bottom line is if they’re gonna run, they’re gonna run. It won’t matter if you have their ID or not. They can still give you a fake/false ID, fake name etc. JMHO & experience

If the reason they are pulled over is something like an outstanding warrent, the officer would then be at risk of them taking off or worse.
