Wrong. Cowboys originated in Spain. The concept of a cattle herder on horseback began in Spain during the Middle Ages. Spanish herders were called “vaqueros” (from vaca, meaning “cow”) and developed many of the tools, techniques, and skills associated with cattle ranching, including roping, riding, and branding.
Spread to the Americas. When Spain colonized the Americas in the 16th century, settlers brought cattle, horses, and vaquero traditions to Mexico and the southwestern regions of what is now the United States. Mexico is basically still New Spain because the Spanish still rule there. Most of Mexico is still so much New Spain compared to the indigenous culture there. Got to love my Spaniard ancestors. Well, Basque, Spanish, French, Portuguese, and Russian mix here, basically a Euromut. 5th-generation European American. 🤷🏼♂️👍🏻
