@missclairebenjamin: How to speak to a staff member about excessive phone use whilst at work… We live in a world where some phone use at work is to be expected. On occasions though, the degree of use whilst at work may become a cause for concern. As the manager you may receive complaints from other team members. Phone use can be distracting or lead people to question how someone has enough time to be using their phone so much. Here is what I would recommend: 👉 Speak to the staff member about their phone use from a place of curiosity. 👉 Avoid automatically assuming the worst in them and “telling them off”. I say this because you’re human and one of the traps we can all fall into is jumping to conclusions. Sometimes there can be a legitimate reason for excessive phone use. Someone may have things going on in their private life so it’s important to check. 👉 Raise their awareness respectfully. If you have ruled this out any legitimate reasons for high amounts of phone use, raise their awareness of the impact and ask them to be more aware going forward. This could sound like: “While I know this isn’t the case, using your phone so much could give the impression to others that you don’t have enough work and it can also be distracting for people. Can I ask you to be more aware of your phone use going forward?” 💬 Have you ever been in a position like this on either side? What would you add here? 📌 Please remember the advice offered in this video is generalised and will not fit every situation. Therefore, please use your own judgement when using this advice and adapt it to suit your situation. ➕ Follow Claire Benjamin for more strategies on navigating tricky work dynamics #worktips #leadershipdevelopment #emotionalintelligence #corporatelife #difficultconversations #managertips #managingpeople
I really like your emphatic approach in these videos, but I also think that people really need to stop being weak and step up to the mark in the workplace, there’s

What are your tips when the Manager has clearly been told off due to grievance I put into HR and now their behaviour is very off with me. Even tho what they were doing was against policy and ruining my MH which they knew I was struggling with

At my last job the first red flag was that we had to hand our phones in before work. I lasted 2 weeks there. I'm an adult and will get my work done without being treated like a school kid

How is it distracting? Are they watching videos at full volume in a shared space? Otherwise I don’t see how it’s anyone’s business as long as the work they’re assigned is getting done. No one is ever going to go to their manager and ask for more work lol

Had a new work colleague who sat scrolling and watching videos at work while they had a massive backlog of work that always got given to me to clear it. So frustrating and management did nothing about it. She was just plain lazy and wanted to get away with being paid to do as little work as possible, so frustrating

or don't pander and be bothered. if work is getting done leave it. if it isn't then performance review.

won't lie I do go on my phone a fair bit but I manage my workload and I'm VERY lucky that my manager doesn't care as long as my stuff gets done 🤭

what about a manager that always picks up on one person who may look at their phone a few times but Completely ignores the fact someone else takes multiple calls and on their phone but that's ok

That’s it- if I do a days work in 4 hours and someone who is much slower takes 2 days to do the same amount of work why should I have to do MORE because I’m better? 😂

had this conversation yesterday. catch us, they pay my phone bill partially so I can use my phone for work to stay in touch with installers and clients. threatened to ask for a company phone and that was the end of that conversation. this started because I was responding to a text from an installer as the manager interrupted me and started grilling me about phone usage. politely told him to piss off
