@allison_mls_ascp: Three things I wish I knew before becoming a Medical Laboratory Scientist 🧪✨ 1️⃣ You’re basically part mechanic. Nobody tells you that half the job is keeping our analyzers running. When an instrument goes down, it’s on us to troubleshoot, swap parts, recalibrate, and get results flowing again—because patient care doesn’t wait. 2️⃣ You’re on your feet. A LOT. This isn’t a sit-at-a-desk kind of career. We’re constantly moving—running samples, lifting supplies, bending, reaching, and staying active for hours at a time. Comfy shoes aren’t optional…they’re survival gear. 👟 3️⃣ It’s fast-paced and stressful. We work directly off of patients—their tests, their emergencies, their lives. When the ER is waiting on critical results, every second matters. It can feel like organized chaos, but that urgency is also what makes the job so meaningful. ❤️ It’s not just test tubes and microscopes—it’s mechanics, movement, and mental stamina all rolled into one. Would I still choose this career? Absolutely. But I wish someone had warned me that this “behind-the-scenes” role is anything but quiet. 💪🔬 Fellow lab pros, what do you wish you knew before starting? #healthcare #medicallabscientist #scientist #laboratory #MLS

Stress because nonlab professionals want a result for their patients but Medical Laboratory Science Professionals want an accurate precise laboratory result for their patients 💖

I wish I would've know how understaffed the field is. like yes ill never be out of a job but also I feel like ill always be taken advantage of because of lack of staff. at my current job I was the ONLY night shift tech for over a year.

Depending on staffing, so much multitasking. It’s like having 100 tabs open in your brain. I write so much on my gloves lol

I'm currently halfway through my post-bac MLS program!!! Love this. What department/bench do you work? Or are you a generalist? Any tips on passing the BoC?

all you say is true but also is nuanced depend on your department in the lab. Rush to provide blood to OR is more related to Blood bank and also in Micro people sit a bit more than the others

Remember- not machines but sophisticated instrumentation and analyzers often interfaced with computers and automation is a tool to assist the cognitive expertise and independent judgment of qualified board-certified medical laboratory scientists

Heavy on the stress. We had two MTPs yesterday, so dealing with those, our regular floor admits needing products, AND our 40 unit emergency shipment to replace the inventory we lost from the MTPs - I was scrambling. 😅
