If you are neurodivergent with a strong sense of justice, you will struggle with religious doctrine.

I can't express how much religious doctrine being forced on me has so subtly ruined my life

I grew up Mormon and undiagnosed autistic and had a lot of religious scrupulosity. When I left the church I went full atheist and am completely disconnected from spirituality and religion now

Hi 👋 I know this maybe random question but I don’t know if you help, I keep thinking about “why god made animals have emotions if he knew that humans will kill them and eat them” and “ do animals really have emotions? “ I’m struggling even when I’m writing this I’m crying cuz I saw a chicken being tied up I feel so emotional towards it. I don’t eat anything for the past days usually just fruits and I’m feeling so ill and sick but I feel like eating them it’s sad cuz they just can’t to live like us. Do you think I need to see a doctor for mental illness ? Please advise Thank you ❤

My oldest son is in a religious cult and has religious scrupulosity and OCD. He is shunning me, his dad, his stepdad and six siblings. I grieve a living child.

You mentioned in another video that you do believe there are spiritual things that are backed by science, yet you are an atheist. Can you explain what scientific studies on spirituality or the supernatural you believe and why that doesn’t at least make you agnostic?

okay I've always questioned if I'm on the spectrum but until you said it I literally never considered someone being religious *not* for the beliefs, just for the social stuff. I guess I understand staying to not rock the family boat, but I did think they believed it, or didn't know it was actively incongruent for them. they just aren't paying attention to the inconsistencies bc whether it's true or not just isn't even the point, it's about the community?

This exact topic comes up in therapy more often than I would like to admit. Being late diagnosed autistic while simultaneously losing my religion at 33 shattered my whole world. It has been 3 long years of trying to rebuild meaning and purpose but I am closer to peace than I ever was when I was highly religious. What has helped is accepting my conflicting neurodivergent traits (opposing autism and adhd traits) as a reflection of a universe that is both orderly and bound by rules while also being beautifully chaotic.

I often felt like people who were deeply into their beliefs and very exact simply had scrupulousity. As a therapist I see this in practice.

What are your thoughts on how people say that their lives have drastically changed and that they have had so much favour on their lives once they have given their life to Christ ?

I loved the rules and the procedures as an adolescent. Once I realized nobody was really following them, I started to conclude that there was little point.

This is so true. I actually created a routine every day to create my rituals. I even call them rituals. and it has nothing to do with religion. Religion just never sat right

Spot on. Both my husband and I are autistic and we each fall on the opposite end of the spectrum that you described.
