Actually pigeons haven’t “forgotten” how to be birds at all. They’ve just always been like that. Like the nests example, their nests have always been like that even pre domestication. The reason why is because the natural habitat of the most common type of pigeon is rocky cliff faces and little caves and stuff (which is why they’re also commonly called rock doves or rock pigeons). Fun fact birds mostly only make nests for their eggs as babies, because the adult birds can just balance on the tree branches while the sleep or use their feet to grab on but obviously eggs can’t do that and they’ll just fall out if a tree without a nest. When it comes to pigeons they would naturally just lay their eggs between / on top of some rocks and while the rocks themselves are usually stopping the eggs from rolling off the cliff and cracking open sometimes they use the sticks as extra protection from rolling off the edge if the wind blows or something. So essentially pigeons make baby gates so their kids don’t fall down the stairs. And concrete ledges are pretty similar to what they’d normally live in anyway so they just kept doing what they would have done in the wild. And as for migration, the common pigeon was just never a migratory species in the first place and that’s why we use them ass messengers. In the wild they live in large communities (around 50-500 members depending on how much food they have), where they all stay in one place occasionally venturing out for food of course. But they don't migrate and never have, once pigeons are born and spend enough time in one place their internal compass will always register that place as home so no matter how far they fly they’ll always want to come back there. Apparently ancient humans noticed that and just decided it would be useful because you could send them on errands and they’d always come back home (though I don’t know how they figured that out because I think initially they were just kept for food like chickens). But yeah we didn’t breed the instinct to migrate out of them they just never had it not all birds migrate they’re called non migratory or resident birds.
