@abcnewsaus: Two women say they were refused surgical miscarriage care at the Catholic-run Mater Mothers’ Hospital in Brisbane. They ended up paying abortion clinics for their miscarriage treatment. They’re calling on the health service to review its processes. The Mater did not agree to an interview. In a statement a spokesperson said it "offers all available care options" to women who are diagnosed with a miscarriage. *The names and faces of both women have been kept private. #ABCNews #ABCNewsQld #Health

Religion should not be involved with health care. We should respect individual beliefs and provide care according to what the patient needs. But a hospital should never be with holding vital care because of religious beliefs

Don’t they take an oath to do no harm? How is denying the removal of potential sepsis-causing, life-threatening tissue ‘doing no harm’?

I hope formal complaints have been put in for these cases. This is a failure of a publicly funded hospital to provide appropriate care imo.

if hospitals receive public money, they should not get to pick and choose what healthcare they provide to the public

Similarly — if anyone reading this has adenomyosis and/or endometriosis and need a hysterectomy, make sure you choose a surgeon who DOES NOT operate solely out of hospitals like this, because the hospital won’t allow it.

Yep, my local hospital is catholic and I need a hysto, my GP says there’s no point referring me there because they’ll refuse under “religious exemption”, so she referred me to another hospital, who declined me because it’s not my local/closest one. So what I’m meant to move in order to get basic health care??? It’s ridiculious.

As someone who had a missed miscarriage it can be very dangerous to not allow the medical attention needed to expel the tissue and fetus

went to their private ER regarding my miscarriage and they wouldn’t even do an ultrasound to check, i had to wait for my specialist appointment 2 weeks later to sort it out. later returned to the same ER regarding the aftermath infection and had to be sent back to the specialist down the gold coast to do another procedure (i passed my fresh iud in the ER too)

I’ve had 2 missed miscarriages in a row, both would not of naturally expelled, treatment is 100% needed as leaving is unsafe. This religious ideology should not be allowed in public hospitals! My heart goes out to both ladies having to go through this in such a tender time.

if the hospital wants to use its religious status as a loophole in what it provides under qld public law, then it should not be a public hospital. as a public hospital it should be bound by qld law and not allowed to denigh legal rights
