Let’s talk about corrections. Despite what social media wants you to believe… corrections are not evil, abusive, or damaging when done fairly, humanely, and with the dog’s best interest in mind. Corrections/punishment are intended to teach a dog what NOT to do. Dogs do learn from corrections. That’s reality. That’s how animals (including humans) learn: behavior produces consequences. And sometimes, to stop dangerous or unwanted behavior, the consequence has to be something the dog wants to avoid. When used properly, corrections can actually reduce stress and confusion in dogs because it helps them understand boundaries. But the key word there is properly. Here’s where the balance comes in: ✅ Corrections must be fair. You shouldn’t correct a dog for something it doesn’t understand. ✅ Corrections should be the right intensity for the dog. One size does NOT fit all. ✅ Corrections must be used in conjunction with positive reinforcement. You can’t just say “no” all the time. You also have to say “yes.” Show the dog what you do want. ✅ Corrections should never come from a place of anger, impatience, or ego. This is where most people screw it up. A correction should be business like and unemotional. When corrections are fair, balanced, and paired with guidance and rewards… they help dogs learn faster, with less confusion. So if you’re struggling with a behavior that food or praise alone isn’t fixing… or if you’ve been led to believe that any correction equals abuse… understand that there’s nuance here and corrections have varying degrees of intensity. Dogs thrive on structure. They feel safe and more confident when they know the rules. And sometimes, the most loving thing you can do is say “Nope, that’s not okay. Let’s try this instead.” That’s real dog training. Agree or disagree?? Drop a comment below. Let’s talk about it.
