I get plenty of enquiries from overseas Truck Drivers particularly from the Arabian and African countries, so what are the requirements and processes. There are 3 key things that you need in order to qualify as a Truck Driver, You need the Education, the Work Experience and the Licensing. For Education, because it's a DAMA occupation, you will need a skills assessment, which means you need 2 years full time work experience, or alternatively you need to complete a Cert II in Driving Operations. For Work Experience, you are going to need 1 year full time work experience, and that can't include the 2 years you just used for your education, so you are going to need a total of 3 years full time work experience as a Truck Driver. For Licensing you need to get a Heavy Commercial Drivers License in Australia. In Australia, these licenses are State based, so you need to figure out, where you are going to be employed and then get the license in that State. A good Choice is Perth, Western Australia, because the whole state is covered by a DAMA agreement and they need truck drivers. Now here is the major problem for a lot of aspiring Truck Drivers... You need to be in Australia to obtain the License, so you need to either arrive as a Tourist and get your License, or you need to get a Student Visa and enrol in one of those Cert II in Driving Operations I mentioned earlier. When you are looking for Jobs, you need to be look for companies in DAMA regions which is anywhere in Western Australia or Northern Territory, Cairns and Townsville in Queensland, Regional South Australia, Orana New South Wales or Goulburn or the South Coast in Victoria.
