the best part was when you used the metric system 🥰

Tinned Meat Product :
Strangely I found this easier to think about by just ignoring the spring and thinking what the tension on the string would be in both cases.

truth hurts :
It might be a smidge longer when hanging as more string weight is acting below the spring

I always find it difficult to explain the reaction force to my class. This is great!!

What about the weight of the spring itself? Horizontally, normal balances its weight but hanging it should have slightly larger force and a little more extension, no?

I guessed the right answer, but I would not have been able to say why. Teaching/learning is so cool.

This is a nice experiment, but you can significantly increase the number of people guessing it wrong, when you compare the horizontal experiment vs a horizontal with one side wall mounted. Most people will guess double stretch for the two weight version.

Meaning, even with one mass on the pulley and the other end fixed, it provides the same extension

I do not understand how the weight at the top influences anything. It is not pulling, just acting as a mount point. How long will the spring stretch if you tie the string at the top?

only works if the mass at each end is the same, correct?

is this why a car crash at 40mph into a wall and 2 cars traveling at 40mph that crash into each other would recive the same force?
