Im with a Swahili Mganga wa kienyiji—who the west would crudely label a “witch doctor” his name is Mr Mwayay “You fuck yesterday?” No. “Good, can’t go in if you did” He led me into the bush, to our destination, the ritual Zimilani Cave. “Don’t be afraid, I am here with you,” he said. No shoes were allowed & a black sash was put around my neck to show the ancestors respect. We walked quietly to the entrance of the cave. It was cold and spooky inside. Even my hosts tread with a healthy sense of fearful respect for the place. I have had negative experiences with African magic so i was on guard. Arriving at the first station a prayer was said on my behalf asking the ancestors to protect & guide me. Moving to the second the floor was covered in guano and alive with insects that crunched with each bare footed step. Visits are strictly limited to 30 minutes. The ancestors return as giant snake if you over stay or offend them. We journeyed to each station, pausing, praying and lighting incense. The final stop was cramped and filled with bats that swarmed around us and crawled above. Smaller caves broke into a maze of endless tunnels. “Smaller caves is where ancestors stay, and the large one is home to another big snake. Ok must go. Do not turn to look until reach your shoes.” The Mganga led me back through the bush to my ride. I payed the man, shook his hand and was on my way with renewed spiritual protections. #africa #magic #traditionalmedicine #culture
