Genuinely asking but if a kid doesn’t know 5x30, does this mean they now have to break it up somehow? Cuz like old school math, you’d just multiply it,,, 5x0 and 5x3, but now what with the new school math lol

I’m more upset that if they get the wrong answer but the steps look right… it’s not marked wrong. I don’t care which way someone does as long as it’s the right answer.

as a teacher who has to teach this every single year... kids hate it parents hate it i end up teaching both ways if i don't they come learning it from their parents anyways... 9/10 kids end up primarily using the old school way and that 1/10 kid when they get the general concept because of bigger numbers and something clicks in their brain and just end up using the old school way.. they dont need to make the lesson that long for "new school" just headache for everyone

we did that unconsciously, we weren't just writing it down. it was all "mental check". I like the new way but still do old school. as long as we get to the same answer and understand the reasoning, teachers did their job!
