@thenatureeducator: 🐢Roads are one of the biggest threats to freshwater turtles as they cut through their habitat, forcing them to cross traffic as they move between water and land. The Western Painted Turtle is the only native freshwater turtle species in British Columbia and is considered at-risk in the province due to habitat loss caused by urban development, wetland drainage, and road construction. In Cranbrook BC, the Rocky Mountain Naturalists have implemented a nesting program at Elizabeth Lake to protect these turtles. Turtles were previously attempting to cross the highway to access nesting habitat which unfortunately led to collisions with vehicles. The nesting sites are located between the lake and the road to prevent turtle crossings. These sites provide female turtles with a safer place to lay eggs and help support the survival of new hatchlings. If you visit Elizabeth Lake, you can contribute to the conservation of these turtles by respecting the designated nesting areas. Avoid biking and/or walking on protected sites to ensure turtle and nest safety. There are numerous other trails available for human activities, so let's leave these spots for the turtles!
