@gaygtownbae: #greenscreenvideo OP: @sarah siegel 🇨🇦 Teratologists were often comprised of biologists, anatomists, natural philosophers, or (a precursor title to “surgeon”) chirurgeons. At that time the term “scientist” didn’t exist, as it wasn’t coined until 1834 (there’s a cool NPR audio article about it.) #bioethics #publichealth #medicalhistory

This reminded me of my relative's copy of the "Safe Counsel/Practical Eugenics" book from 1895 that I was able to look at back in 2022. There was a whole section about how the mother's behavior would supposedly impact the unborn child. Horrifying and fascinating.

Some form of all those talking points always pops up when a baby born with Anencephaly goes viral. Very interesting video! What are your thoughts on the impact selective breeding in domestic animals had on those theories of eugenics at the turn of the century

I do want to point out though, that a lot of the medical interventions are actually extremely uncomfortable and even painful. For example, If a child is born with severe holoprosencephaly, has no ability to have meaningful interaction with the world and likely no consciousness, is constantly seizing requiring multiple medications and still having multiple seizures a day, is on ventilation, TPN, etc its not to say they don’t “deserve” the treatments, but that going through all of these invasive measures may be causing prolonged suffering without much else

i think its interesting that were starting to have this conversation at a time that so much people are claiming to be pro life at the same time they refuse to take their prenatal and vaccines that prevent illnesses that causes the children to be "incompatible" with life.

very interesting- many medications that can cause deformities to the embryo/fetus are called teratogens - even alcohol is considered teratogenic when consumed while pregnant

I fear that the push towards MAID for less and less terminally ill people in Canada is also a form of eugenics

I get the philosophical discussion and I think it’s a good one to have but pain is real and at a certain point with certain conditions it’s not “projection” it is real and measurable

My take on MAID is that even if it was an ethical and humane practice we have to assume that the worst person in existence at the time will abuse it in the worst way possible, and I’m not saying that this should stop us from implementing this idea but we should take that into consideration and create contingencies for potential abuse & this is why as the world is hurtling towards fascism I don’t support the implementation of this.

Hey evn, good food for thought. I’ve had a similar consideration around 1. Allowing elders to refuse medical intervention 2. Allowing young adults with chronic pain to end their suffering. Conflicted sentiments for the family anf for the individuals feeling hopeless.

This is so interesting. I had an oophrectomy bc of a teratoma. I’m also studying social work in Australia and had a whole lecture on Voluntary Assisted Dying in palliative care, our laws are still very new here around it.

I saw the Pathological-anatomical collection in the Narrenturm when I was in Vienna and while I intellectually understand the importance of this work. Seeing the collection IN the Narrenturm was not a fun day.

This feels like when I explained to my psychologist how to decided what was a good thing and bad thing to believe in. Like I know what one is the good thing but getting to the answer is so hard and explaining it!!! Argh!!!

As GenX Oregonian, we have end of life exit assistance for terminally ill and I’ve always felt very comforted by having the law and program available because the way we flog the elderly is just 🙄😭 But my parents were born in the 1920’s, though, and they feared the new Oregon law a LOT. Lately, I am understanding the why behind their hesitation. I feel like our ethics are curling in on themselves as people distort scientific findings to their liking 😮‍💨

This is very interesting. I’ll probably check out a couple of those books from my local library to learn some more. Do you have any additional recommendations?

I wrote my own literature review for my uni scientific research class on the bias able-bodied parents hold when it comes to early genetic screening. I called it 'survival of the foetus: how early genetic testing lets bias blind us' (I am very happ with the word-play btw. It is a topic of interest for me as I have a genetic condition that is fatal to males, if I pass this mutation onto a male foetus, it will either miscarry, be stillborn or pass away within a year in pain. I covered how able-bodied parents have struggled with news of any possible 'imperfections' when undergoing early testing on either fertilized eggs in an ivf lab or early in-utero tests, both caused by media and society's stereotypes of certain conditions and the widening range of information we are able to get from a tiny piece of dna - hight, likelihood of immune strength, allergies, differing risks of vulnerabilities to certain conditions. I focused on how there is way too little information out there to be relyed on when it comes to deciding to chose whether to go through with a pregnancy or not. some genetic conditions won't affect someone until they are 30, some have little impact on their daily lives as long as they take a pill in the morning, but because those conditions exist on a sliding scale, those who are not really affected fly under the radar, and those with severe cases are the ones who pop up when someone googles the name of the condition. I got a 86/100 for the presentation. 😅

Not really related to the topic, but I've never heard the term expiring used in relation to a fetus. Is that just a Tiktok censor thing or is that actually a term used?
