In a study researchers looked at 707,152 transactions from 5,379 real financial market traders over almost nine years. they were studying something called “chasing,” which is when someone keeps taking risks after losing money because they are desperate to get back to break-even. what they found was really interesting. once traders fell below their break-even point, the desire to get back to zero influenced whether they continued taking risks. and this can happen even when continuing means risking even larger losses. that is the dangerous part. you are down $300, so your brain starts focusing on making $300 back. you take another trade and now you are down $500. instead of making you want to stop, that bigger loss can make the urge to recover everything even stronger. so you keep trading. and that is what i find so important about research like this. it shows that this reaction is not just some random trading mistake. it comes from very normal human responses to loss, risk and the desire to get back to safety. our brains are built to react strongly when something feels like a loss or threat. those reactions can happen automatically, before we have really stopped to think about whether the next decision actually makes sense. that is why understanding your psychology and nervous system matters so much in trading. you need to know what these automatic reactions look like, when they are showing up, and how to stop them from making the decision for you. the more i learn about the psychology and biology behind trading behaviour, the more everything starts to make sense. sharing everything i learned here.
