After the conquest of 1453, the young sultan asserted his authority by ordering the Grand Vizier’s execution, making him the first Ottoman vizier to be put to death. Halil Pasha’s body was taken to İznik (ancient Nicaea), the seat of his family’s power and influence. The Çandarlı dynasty had endowed mosques, schools, and charitable works there, making İznik their ancestral home.
