Thailand is particularly bad for this. It’s possible to sue someone for defamation for leaving an honest but negative review. So in tripadvisor or Google, you are looking for the difference between a 4.7 review and a 4.9 review.

i dont understand why westerners refuse to allow their rating systems to mean anything. you cant tell good restaurants apart from mediocre ones because they all have 4.7 ratings star ratings should divide tranches between stars "terrible" = one star "equivalent to the best restaurants ive been to" = 5 stars

My honest experience with google reviews. It’s pretty much the same as tabelog. What to watch out is if the rating is just too high 4.7 above with more than 1k reviews. If a place has averaged of 4.0-4.5 then it’s good cuz the low rate comes from the locals also same system just a bit higher cuz of tourists
