Love when lube techs are doing brakes and stuff while I have to tie up a bay charging/testing a battery for 2 hours….

It’s crazy because ive never seen a lube tech recommend anything but filters, tires and brakes. If a lube tech ask for any assistance in what to recommend and it gets sold it better go back to the technician that helped the lubbie out

lubetech should only recommend up sale and if approved should go to main line tech

If the lube tech is hourly, then yeah they need to give that up. But at my shop lube techs are flat rate as well. So who should do the work?

lol I mean I see the point BUT if it’s slow and the lube tech wants to learn the line tech can teach them while getting flagged

Ugh. This. I can’t tell what side the creator is on but lubies need to just be doing oil changes and not take our work. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve been out of work waiting for a ticket or job and a lubie goes above and beyond to get that “$5 spiff” on 4 or 5 hours of upsale labor. They are hourly, I’m not. If I don’t have work I don’t get paid. That’s like $200 I could have made vs the $5 or whatever they are going to make in addition to their hourly.

Lube techs are meant to handle lighter easier quicker work like oil changes tire rotations, and typically don’t have all the training mainline techs have to correctly do the work. Now what happens if the lube tech messes up and the car comes back is he going to diagnose it?no, If it was his fault and mainline tech is fixing his mess up, can’t charge the customer which creates problems. Smoother process if the technician that is qualified and meant to do the work, does the work.

In my country. Lube techs are not mechanics. They are not allowed to do repairs on vehicles. For insurance reasons. Lube techs do not have mechanical training.

Dosent matter if you or Rosa parks recommend the work. The car drove in the same mf condition dosent matter who looked at it if the brakes need done they need done tf? People act like they noticed it and wrote it down so they upsold it? Just comes down to if the customer has the bread or not. I promise your mpi video is not making them sales lmao. And an hourly flagging hours it just putting more money in the dealer pocket like wtf? Flat rate techs should get them hours regardless there’s 100+ reasons. Hourly gunna fk it up and then the main tech gunna have to do it again anyway 😮‍💨

okay I get it but how are lube techs supposed to learn and get good at the trade as well if they are stuck doing basic maintenance? like yeah theres classes and courses but hands on experience experience is king over any of that

Sounds like management needs to have a conversation with the techs

this conversation only has one side talking because if all the for when to mainline then hourly never gets to learn no solutions. shops won't pay techs to work slower to teach the new guys

Doesn’t the licensed guy have to check it over anyways ? And when the lube tech has a question or is stuck with a car who is going to help!?? 🤣

I’ve had up sales go to other techs when I was flat rate and need less to say I packed and left because I complained about it and got told I was selfish

I was an hourly tech at a dealer (most recently CJDR) but I started out hourly at all dealers I've worked at. CJDR dealer had hourly techs doing recalls, including airbag recalls. There were recalls I refused to do, because I didn't have the skills to perform it (welding tie rod on 2500 ⬆️Rams for example). We did get a bonus as a group of 5 when I first started; if we hit say 50 hours total as a group, we got an extra 1$ per hour. So if we hit, I made $13 instead of $12 an hour. Fast forward to covid, got bumped up to $17, they started having us do more maintenance (4x4 service, brake flush, fuel injection services) when we could. No pay raises when they hired in new hourly techs at $25 an hour...that we had to train... tried to give me a 3% upsell bonus on parts and labor when I raised concern about the pay discrepancy(then advisors would cut labor). I'm at an independent now, make $26 an hour, and get 7 hours OT. Have to do more than oil changes, but it is what it is 😅

My single owned shop had the lube techs do most work under supervision and kept the history on who actually worked on said vehicle. Good for learning and both master and lube got payed to do it

I just don’t lend tools or experience knowledge to the lube tech. I just sit back and watch the show feeling bad for the customer who is pay for this.
