In our house, being part of the church wasn’t optional. Just like we had rules for our home, we had expectations for how we’d live as part of the church. Why? Because the church isn’t just a place to attend—it’s a family to belong to. Our kids are now ages 21 down to 15, and from the time they were little, they were taught to serve, give, and sit under God’s Word. We never treated the church as just an event but as a community to live among. By God’s grace, all four of our kids love Jesus, love us as their parents, and love the church. At this stage of their lives, it’s not a question of if they’ll stay connected to the church because it’s become part of who they are. We fully understand that it is God alone who saves and draws our children to Himself (John 6:44), but as parents, it’s our responsibility to ingrain them in the life of the local church as He does His work. The problem today is that too many people treat church like an event. But biblically, the church is God’s family (Eph. 2:19). Parents, we don’t hesitate to require chores or homework, but when it comes to faith, we let our kids decide? That’s backwards. If we don’t ground our kids in the church, the world will gladly disciple them instead. Raise your kids to love the church—not just to attend it, but to belong to it.
