A lot of people wait to be told what to believe. They will wait for a tweet, a reel, or a newsletter to tell them what to think. For example, let's say that Sally watched an advert on YouTube last week and she thought it was pretty fun and she enjoyed it. But then everybody she follows on social media said it was abusive, it was offensive, it was hate speech. And so she learns to hate it. While the technology might have changed, there is nothing new in this. In his essay Self-Reliance, Emerson argues that we should stop borrowing what we see. Stop relying on other people to tell us how things are, or what things mean. Take the time to be the author of your own thoughts. Here are two ways to test whether your beliefs are actually from conviction. First, imagine that you are on a desert island or utterly alone in your house. You cannot talk about it, post about it, or win points for it. Would you still hold that belief? Second, how much are you willing to sacrifice for that belief? How much time and effort are you willing to give it? Imagine that that belief became suddenly very unpopular. Would you still hold it? Emerson's point is not to be contrary about everything, but simply to think things through. It might be that established wisdom, and your tribe, does actually have something good to say, but if you don't give it the time to think it through, how can you ever know?
