People in the comments are saying you don't owe anyone an explanation which is partly true but I think an explanation is professional and respectful. You did great here!! Especially with how kind he was, he deserves an explanation to properly better the company. He needs to understand the reasoning behind it so hopefully there's better turnout in the future.
