@trevorcarroll_: Here’s a repost of an older TikTok video I made explaining what the internal autistic experience is like from my perspective. #autism #autistic #neurodivergent

imagine being in the deep end of the pool, while everyone else knows how to wade water, but you dont. but also have the fear of people realizing you dont. because if you admit, people will either make fun of you, scold you or pretend to sympathize. while maybe that one person might help you

I appreciate you describing this. This is really important for families and educators to understand. We know what the literature says, but hearing from an actually autistic person besides, my son is very meaningful.

It’s also like a teeter totter or swing, sometimes I’m going up sometimes down. But I am always in motion, moods, sensations, focus, etc. like a roller coaster, sometimes little things make big responses, other times something big won’t elicit a response that seems appropriate.

So true, my husband finds it difficult to understand why I can’t wear something one day and not another because it sometimes causes me sensory overload 😅

It's like being in a constantly noisy bar, all the sounds are at the same volume, all the lights are blinding, you're in a foreign country and you only understand a few words of the language spoken there🤔

Plus being exhausted from just trying to keep my head up all the time. My friends and family are very supportive, but sometimes it’s so hard to make them understand how things they don’t even consider as costing someone energy will require me to recover for a day.

Totally - I find that when I try to communicate it’s extremely irritating to do platitudes - surface level stuff. But when I try to go deeper people can’t pay attention. On the other hand I have a hard time clearly communicating my ideas because I can’t easily distill them down into one.

Think you nailed the definition. 🙂That’s a really great example re heightened senses and Spot on with the detail. Weather is a special interest of mine too! I was given a book on clouds & what it means when I was younger & treasured this book!

I think there’s another way to look at the idea of “over thinking”. In my experience, it’s not really just observable details (be it visual or auditory, touch, etc) that I take in. This information is mixed with relationships between the details. When we use these “little things” that most other people don’t notice in our thought process to draw conclusions - This is “bottom-up” thinking. It is a unique and valid perspective on our environment and on situations/systems/problems where our minds live. Our logical thought processes and intuitions come from that perspective. It’s like having a little bit of a deeper view into the ‘butterfly effect’. You’re not overthinking, You are just thinking.

Hey, that's similar to bipolar disorder. I have that and it's overwhelming. Not the same but I can relate, especially to meltdowns.

it feels like you are constantly judged for every thing you do and say, anxiety all the time, people hating you for no reason even before trying to know you, bullied from childhood so just trying to heal that inner child that didn't deserve to be treated that way,so many struggles that can't even be described, the loneliness the naivity that people take advantage of, feeling other s emotions, isolation...

If I had to try and explain to a neurotypical person it would be 'imagine someone introduces you onto stage where you have to perform but you weren't told why you were there let alone any context around the performance. Also imagine bright lights, the crowd chatting at once and you are wearing the most uncomfortable clothing you could imagine" to me that's how exposed and vulnerable social situations make me feel if not with my safe people.
