This phenomenon is a great real-world example of Boyle’s Law combined with the relationship between pressure and altitude. The Science of the Popping Chip Bag 1. Initial State (Indiana) The chip bag was sealed at a low elevation (in Indiana). The air inside the bag was sealed at a specific pressure. This internal pressure was roughly equal to the high atmospheric pressure outside the bag. 2. Ascent to Pikes Peak (Colorado) As the car drives up Pikes Peak, the elevation increases. Atmospheric pressure decreases with increasing altitude because there is less air column pressing down from above. 3. The Result: Inflation The air sealed inside the chip bag remains constant (or nearly so, besides temperature changes) but the pressure outside the bag drops significantly. This difference creates a large pressure imbalance. The higher internal pressure pushes outward on the bag’s flexible walls, causing it to inflate dramatically, as seen in the picture. The 8 miles past the entrance mark indicates the specific altitude where the pressure differential became so great that the bag material reached its maximum stretching point and finally popped, equalizing the internal and external pressures.
